At UFC 172 in Baltimore the Champ came to fight, and the Champ did what he was supposed to do. In a dominant performance, Jon “Bones” Jones defended his Light Heavyweight title in a 50-45 decision over Glover Teixeira.
Using his deadly reach advantage, Jones kept Teixeira at Bay and, once again, used his devastating elbows to inflict major damage on his opponent. I would put Jones’ elbows right up there with Ronda Rousey’s armbar as the deadliest weapons in the UFC. Jones has the largest wingspan in the UFC at 84.5″, and consequently is an assassin with his elbows. When he’s landing them effectively, like he was last night, he’s all but unbeatable folks.
When it’s all said and done, Jones took care of business and defended his title, like a true champion is supposed to do. Next up for Bones is likely going to be the highly-anticipated rematch with Alexander Gustafsson. Gustafsson put up the best fight against Jones in recent memory, at UFC 165. Many were questioning whether Jones had lost something after that fight. You can rest assured that he’ll be prepared for the rematch and the two fighters will likely give us another fight for the ages.
But until Gustafsson, or anyone else, can unseat Jones from his Light Heavyweight throne, the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC will sit atop the MMA world, still the champion.
