Throughout history, some of the most innovative and creative minds were not appreciated during their time. Socrates, Archimedes, Nikola Tesla, to name a few. Their theories were too advanced and their contemporaries could not appreciate their genius. The brilliance of these savants is off the charts, but what might be even more impressive is their bravery. It takes courage and fortitude to step out of one’s comfort zone and show the world something it has never seen before. Steve Orosco is doing just that for the sport of MMA right here in our backyard.
On August 1, 2015 Orosco will be launching The Main Event, a black tie MMA Event at the Downtown Hard Rock Hotel under the banner of his new company, Smash Global LLC. Orosco conceived the idea because he felt that MMA in San Diego needed a facelift. “They don’t do black tie MMA events in this country. They do it overseas, they do it for boxing in this country, but they don’t do it for MMA. So I said, ‘Big risk/reward, why not try it?’,” Orosco said.
With the Main Event, Orosco is specifically marketing to the top 1% – the movers and shakers that drive the economy. “The people in the top 1% are not going to go to an Indian Reservation to watch these fights or be in that same kind of crowd. Just like if they go to a football game, they want to be in the box seats. I want to get those people more involved into this sport. And I don’t think that until that happens, the sport will really truly evolve,” Orosco said.
Part of the genius behind Orosco’s idea is that The Main Event is not just a fight event. It is also a charitable event as well as a veritable gold mine for networking. Orosco is providing visibility to the individuals and companies that attend. Visibility that all attendees can use to their benefit. “They can use that visibility for anything. From client retention, to client relations management, to networking for corporate outings,” Orosco explained. In fact, Orosco views The Main Event as more of a professional and charitable event, with MMA as the entertainment platform.
The Main Event will be held in the Ballroom at the Hard Rock Hotel and feature a hosted cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres. The fights themselves will last about 2 hours with an hour and a half of post fight networking and mingling with the fighters. Orosco’s vision is to treat the fighters like celebrities and let them bask in the glory of their competition. “[The fighters] can use that time and opportunity to be around these people that they normally wouldn’t be able to – potential sponsors. Because these people are really going to want to be around those guys and have that intimate experience in the ballroom give it that extra value.”
Orosco admits that he has had to go up a steep learning curve in planning The Main Event, but he has consulted with professionals and experts in order to produce the most successful event possible. Orosco knows that all of his outside-the-box thinking is necessary to change the way MMA is perceived and to bring a whole new demographic to the sport. “I want to get those people more involved into this sport. And I don’t think that until that happens, the sport will really truly evolve,” Orosco said.
